Sahara Desert

Merzouga

Golden dunes at the edge of the Sahara

Why visit

Merzouga is a small village beside Erg Chebbi, a spectacular sea of dunes that rises up to 150 metres. It is the most accessible place in Morocco to experience the true Sahara.

  • Watching the sun set over the dunes from the back of a camel — and waking up early to see it rise again — is one of the most memorable experiences in North Africa.
  • Beyond the dunes, the area is rich in culture: Gnaoua musicians in Khamlia, nomadic families, fossil beds and the historic market town of Rissani.
